Curriculum at a Glance
The Kindergarten program at Holy Family School is the foundation for making life-long learners out of our youngest students. Each kindergarten has a third grade buddy assigned to them for Mass and other events. Strategic lesson planning and creative teaching methods are the basis of core academic and spiritual fundamentals. Hands-on activities such as music, games, and listening activities enhance the key areas of study.

Students leave behind “wall words” and third grade buddies to build an academic and spiritual foundation rooted in greater independence. Students begin earning letter grades on report cards in the first grade to mark progress. Creativity, hands-on activities, cooperative learning, special projects, and field trips are used in combination with academic instruction to make learning interesting and fun.
Highlights
Grade one enjoys working on the smart board, daily reading groups, and working with different art media. In Math students learn addition and subtraction facts, how to solve and write word problems, and how to use tally marks.

In second grade, students build a spiritual foundation by making their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. During this year, students also participate in the planning of Mass for the first time. The second grade year builds a strong academic foundation through small, leveled groups during guided reading and places a strong emphasis in math on regrouping, time, money, and mastery of facts

Students leave behind “wall words” and third grade buddies to build an academic and spiritual foundation rooted in greater independence. Students begin earning letter grades on report cards in the first grade to mark progress. In second grade, students are introduced to study guides and test-taking skills while the religious aspect of this school year is concentrated on making the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Third graders are introduced to note taking and the Accelerated Reader Program while also serving as buddies to the Kindergarten students. Creativity, hands-on activities, cooperative learning, special projects, and field trips are used in combination with academic instruction to make learning interesting and fun.

Curriculum at a Glance
The fourth grade curriculum is aligned with the National Common Core Standards. Reading, English, Spelling, Math, Science, Health, Computer and Physical Education are part of the curriculum. The fourth grade Social Studies content is Ohio History. The year is spent learning all about our great state. In fourth grade the music program consists of chorus and recorders. Religion is taught as a subject as well and our beliefs and values are incorporated throughout the day.

Individuality, accountability, and self-motivation are the qualities instilled in our upper elementary students. The fifth grade students participate in the Poland Township Police Department’s D.A.R.E. program and are encouraged to partake in beginning band. Greater expectations are placed upon the fifth graders as they prepare for the middle school years. Students participate in many hands-on and group-centered activities.

The Holy Family School 6th Grade Curriculum, based on the National Common Core Content Standards, is divided between three teachers. Number systems, geometry, ratios, and probability are among the many topics of study in math. The Language Arts include fiction, nonfiction, informational text, poetry, writing, spelling, grammar, and mechanics. Science covers earth, life, and physical science. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, as well as, the scientific method, and hands on activities. Social Studies’ focus is on the history and development of societies, along with map skills. Religion includes the study of the Old Testament people and events.

Curriculum at a Glance
The eighth grade curriculum consists of the study of American History covering the time from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. The eighth grade also studies Physical Science and Pre-Algebra. Our Literature series includes several anthologies - all based on various themes. Throughout the series, we cover literary, grammar, and spelling skills. Also, we incorporate these skills into novels that the students read throughout the quarter, including the YSU English Festival books. We strive to meet the Common Core standards while incorporating technology into the learning environment.
Highlights
One of the biggest highlights of the eighth grade is Confirmation in the Spring of the year celebrated with the Bishop. The Eigth grade also goes to Washington DC in May.
